Cardiovascular Health Supplements

Cardiovascular health refers to the health and wellness of your heart and blood circulation. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the major causes of death globally, with roughly 17.9 million people dying from CVD in 2019. This accounts for 32 percent of all worldwide deaths, with 85 percent of them due to stroke or heart attack (1).

Because of the prevalence and severity of cardiovascular conditions, it is important to prioritize your heart health. You can do this via medication, lifestyle changes, and supplementation. This article will discuss specific heart health supplements that you can try.

Types of supplements for cardiovascular health

Heart support supplements

Supplements for your heart health can do a variety of things, one of which is to regulate your cholesterol levels. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the “bad” form of cholesterol, and too high levels can put you at risk for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is when the arteries narrow due to plaque buildup, which can lead to stroke, heart attack, and more.

Blood circulation supplements

The circulatory system in your body consists of your heart and blood vessels that run throughout your whole body. Your circulation is what delivers oxygen and nutrients to various tissues and cells and removes carbon dioxide, keeping your body functioning properly. Supporting your circulatory system ensures that you maintain proper blood flow to the right places at the right time.

Leg circulation supplements

Your circulatory system pumps blood all around your body, including your legs. Some people may have poor circulation in their legs. If this is the case, you may have symptoms such as numbness, tingling, cramping, swelling, or coldness in your legs and feet. Certain supplements may help with this issue.

Blood pressure supplements

Your blood pressure refers to the pressure that your blood puts on your artery walls. The arteries are what transport blood around your body from the heart. Maintaining a normal blood pressure below a value of 130/80 mmHg is important. A blood pressure higher than this can lead to stroke, heart disease, or heart attack.

Supplements for cardiovascular support

Beet root

This crimson vegetable has extensive therapeutic benefits, including advantages for your cardiovascular system. Beet root contains very high levels of nitrates like nitric oxide (NO). Getting nitrates from your diet can support heart health by lowering blood pressure, preventing blood clotting, and protecting against pulmonary hypertension and peripheral artery disease (PAD) (2).

Cranberries are an American fruit known to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease via prevention of blood clotting and lowering blood pressure. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic mechanisms that contribute to its protective properties (3).

One analysis evaluated several studies that assessed how cranberries affected cardiovascular risk factors. Findings indicated that cranberry significantly decreased blood pressure and body mass index (BMI), two important contributors to cardiovascular disease. It also increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the “good” cholesterol, in younger adults (4).

Elderberry is a rich purple berry with demonstrated antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, it is commonly used in the context of protecting against the cold and flu. Some other studies have evaluated its potential in improving cardiovascular disease, such as with cholesterol levels and vasoprotection. However, its efficacy in this context has not been confirmed (5).

Spearmint is a plant belonging to the mint family. It is often contained in several foods and herbal teas. Spearmint is closely related to peppermint and thus may possess some cardioprotective effects. In one study, peppermint decreased heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure, potentially by reducing smooth muscle tone (6).

Stinging nettle

Stinging nettle, or urtica dioica, is a plant that originates from northern Europe and Asia. In vivo studies in animals suggest that stinging nettle can lower blood pressure. This is likely due to its ability to induce a vasorelaxant effect via the production of nitric oxide (7).

Stone breaker

Stone breaker, or phyllanthus amarus, is found in tropical climates. It possesses antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects. In rat models, it improved factors related to cardiac function, suggesting a cardioprotective effect (8).

Broccoli sprout

Broccoli sprout contains sulforaphane, an important therapeutic ingredient. Among sulforaphane’s many medicinal effects, it can improve cardiac health. One study showed that sulforaphane’s mechanism improved blood flow by lowering blood pressure. Broccoli sprouts can support your heart health because of sulforaphane’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity (9).

Pine Bark

Pine bark contains oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), which are thought to improve cardiac health via antioxidant activity. Pine bark may also provide benefits via lowering blood pressure (10).

Motherwort is a plant used for several conditions related to menstruation, thyroid, and digestion. In addition, individuals sometimes use it for heart-related conditions like irregular heartbeat and heart failure (11).

Dandelion root

Dandelion root has diuretic properties, meaning it can eliminate more urine and fluid from your body. These diuretic properties can also help with lowering high blood pressure (12).

There are several ways to improve your cardiovascular health, one of which includes diet. To best support your cardiovascular system, eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Implement whole grains and foods that are high in protein like fish, lean meats, and eggs. Avoid saturated fats, and instead choose oils that are high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These include olive oil, nuts, fish, seeds, and avocados. Avoid added sugars.

The cardiovascular system consists of two major components: the heart and blood vessels. These two entities work together to pump blood into a network of arteries, veins, and capillaries. The cardiovascular system is important because it delivers oxygen via the blood to the various tissues and cells in the body while removing carbon dioxide.
